Sakte Tid

Nature and Human Frequency at 68°N

Salangsverket, Norway/ 2026/ Master Thesis

This research explores the future possibilities of a century-old post-industrial site, tracing its evolution from a forgotten ruin reclaimed by natural succession to a recognized cultural heritage site.

- Time Tension for 68°N

Under the polar light and shadows of 68°N, time moves both fleetingly fast and profoundly slow seasons shift with fierce velocity, while the industrial ruins dwell in enduring silence.

This project serves as a matchmaking of space and time, weaving a thread of mutual symbiosis between the industrial giants of yesteryear and contemporary local industries, whether through direct, vibrant synergy or subtle, indirect dialogues.

In the small-populated town of Sjøvegan (near Salangsverket), the rhythms of local life are illustrated through a spatial sphere-of-life diagram, which highlights the stark contrast between the extreme Arctic summer and winter. Most intriguing is the residents' resilient and positive attitude toward time and social warmth. During the freezing depths of winter, their lifestyle extends beyond merely adapting to the cold and navigating linear paths lit by artificial light; it is defined by a conscious effort to cherish finite moments of human connection and collectively seek sources of warmth, such as the sauna. Conversely, the summer rhythm shifts entirely to maximizing daylight hours and embracing the sheer joy of living.

Sakte Tid (Slow Time)

It shows how they cheerfully endure the long winters and joyfully welcome the brief, precious summers. This reflects a subtle relationship with time:
"experiencing the present moment while imagining the future."

Friluftsliv (Nature to Human)

It emphasizes the psychological connection between humans and the environment, ecological awareness, and finding peace of mind and social connection by being outdoors.

Kos/ Koselig  (Human to Human)

Emphasizing the creation of warm connections and shared comfort, even "under harsh natural conditions".
This concept centers on fostering social connection, a welcoming atmosphere, and a profound sense of well-being and inner peace.
